Coverage details
Plain-language definitions of each commercial insurance product we write.
General Liability
Commercial General Liability (CGL) protects your business against third-party bodily injury, property damage, and personal/advertising injury claims. It's the foundation policy for nearly every business — covering slip-and-falls, product injuries, and the lawyer fees needed to defend them. Often the first thing clients, landlords, and contracts require.
Commercial Property
Commercial property insurance covers your buildings, business personal property (inventory, equipment, furniture), and outdoor signage against fire, storms, theft, and other named or open perils. Coverage forms range from basic to special (open perils). Business income coverage can be added to replace lost revenue during repairs.
Commercial Auto
Commercial auto insurance covers vehicles owned, leased, or used by your business. Coverage includes liability, physical damage, hired auto (rentals), and non-owned auto (employee personal vehicles used for business). Required if you have business-titled vehicles or employees driving for work.
Business Owners Policy (BOP)
A BOP bundles general liability, commercial property, and business interruption coverage into one cost-effective package for eligible small businesses. Available to office-based, retail, light contracting, restaurants, and many other industries. Saves 10-20% versus buying each coverage separately.
| Coverage | What it protects | In a BOP? |
|---|---|---|
| General Liability | Third-party bodily injury, property damage, and advertising injury claims | Included |
| Commercial Property | Your building, equipment, inventory, and furnishings | Included |
| Business Interruption | Lost income and expenses while you recover from a covered loss | Included |
| Workers' Comp, Commercial Auto, Cyber, Professional Liability | Employee injuries, vehicles, data breaches, professional errors | Added separately |
Bundling the first three into a BOP typically runs 10–20% less than buying each as a standalone policy.
Workers Compensation
Workers comp is required for almost every Michigan employer with 1+ employees working 35+ hours per week. It covers medical care and wage replacement for work-related injuries — protecting you from being sued by injured employees. We manage classifications, audits, and Mod ratings to keep your premium right-sized.
Professional Liability (E&O)
Errors & Omissions (E&O) insurance covers professionals against claims of negligence, mistakes, or failure to deliver promised services. Essential for consultants, attorneys, accountants, financial advisors, real estate agents, contractors, IT professionals, and anyone who gives advice for a fee.
Cyber Liability
Cyber liability insurance covers your business against data breaches, ransomware attacks, cyber extortion, and the cost of forensic investigation, customer notification, credit monitoring, and PR. As cyber attacks become more common, this is now considered essential for any business that handles customer data.
Commercial Umbrella
Commercial umbrella sits on top of your general liability, auto, and employer's liability policies, adding $1M-$25M+ in additional liability coverage. Often required by larger contracts, lessors, or municipalities. A relatively inexpensive way to dramatically expand your liability protection.
Builders Risk
Builders Risk (course of construction) insurance covers buildings under construction or major renovation against fire, theft, vandalism, and weather damage. Coverage runs from groundbreaking through project completion. Required by most lenders on construction loans and by many general contractors on commercial projects.
Contractors Insurance
Contractors need a coordinated stack of coverages: general liability, workers comp, commercial auto, tools & equipment, builders risk, and a commercial umbrella. Trade-specific exposures (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, general contracting) drive carrier selection and pricing.
Restaurant Insurance
Restaurant policies need to cover unique exposures: liquor liability, food spoilage, slip-and-fall, employee dishonesty, equipment breakdown, and assault & battery. Different forms apply to fast-casual, full-service, food trucks, breweries, and bars. We have markets for each.
Cannabis Insurance
Cannabis businesses (cultivators, processors, dispensaries, transporters, testing labs, and ancillary services) need specialized coverage from cannabis-friendly markets. Standard carriers exclude cannabis activities. We work with the leading cannabis-specific markets to write product liability, general liability, property, and other key coverages.
Fitness & Gym Insurance
Fitness centers, gyms, yoga studios, martial arts studios, and personal trainers face elevated injury liability exposure. Coverage includes general liability, professional liability for instructors, member-injury claims, equipment, and assault & battery. Class-specific exposures (CrossFit, hot yoga, etc.) drive pricing.
Garage & Auto Repair
Garage operations need garagekeepers (covers customer vehicles in your care), garage liability (premises and operations), and commercial auto coverage. Body shops, mechanical repair, towing operators, and dealerships each have unique forms. We write all of them.
Property Management
Property management companies and rental property owners need landlord (DP-1 or DP-3) policies for buildings, commercial property for multi-unit and commercial buildings, general liability for premises exposure, and professional liability for management activities.
Condo Association
Condo association master policies cover the building structure, common areas, and association liability. Coverage can be 'all-in' (covers fixtures inside units), 'bare walls' (everything outside unit walls), or 'single entity' (somewhere in between). Pairs with individual unit owners' HO-6 policies.
Church Insurance
Church and religious organization policies cover the property, premises liability, sexual misconduct liability, D&O for the board, volunteer coverage, special event coverage, and clergy professional liability. Important for any congregation or nonprofit religious entity.
Bonds & Surety
Surety bonds guarantee performance of an obligation — contract bonds (bid, performance, payment bonds for construction), license bonds (required by Michigan for many licensed professionals), notary bonds, ERISA fidelity bonds, and court bonds. Different from insurance: the surety can recover from the principal.
Business Interruption
Business interruption (sometimes called business income) coverage replaces lost revenue and pays continuing expenses when a covered property loss forces your business to suspend operations. Critical addition to commercial property coverage — without it, even a fully covered fire could put you out of business permanently.
One-Day Special Event
Special event policies provide one-day or short-term liability coverage for weddings, graduations, conferences, festivals, and other gatherings. Most venues require it. Coverage typically includes general liability and host liquor liability. Pricing starts around $100-$200 for most events.
Trucking & Transportation
Trucking and transportation businesses need primary liability, physical damage, motor truck cargo, and non-trucking liability — plus the FMCSA filings (such as the MCS-90) interstate carriers require. We write owner-operators, fleets, and for-hire and private carriers.
Manufacturing
Manufacturers need product liability, commercial property for equipment and stock, business interruption, commercial auto, and workers comp. Product recall and equipment breakdown are common add-ons. We match coverage to your process and exposures.
Counselors & Therapists
Counselors, therapists, and social workers need professional liability (malpractice) plus general liability for their practice. Telehealth, group practices, and licensure exposures all factor in. We write solo practitioners and group practices.
Consultants
Consultants need professional liability (E&O) for the advice they give, plus general liability and often cyber coverage. Management, IT, marketing, HR, and engineering consultants each carry different exposures. We tailor coverage to your specialty.
Water Well Contractors
Water well drilling and pump contractors need general liability with the right classification, commercial auto for rigs, contractor's equipment (inland marine), pollution liability, and workers comp. We write drillers, pump installers, and geothermal contractors.
Liquor Liability
Any Michigan business that sells or serves alcohol can be held liable under the state's dram shop law for harm caused by a visibly intoxicated or underage patron. Liquor liability is separate from general liability and required by most liquor licenses and landlords. We write bars, restaurants, and special events.
Home Health Care
Home health and home care agencies need professional liability, general liability, abuse and molestation coverage, non-owned auto for caregivers, and workers comp. Medical and non-medical agencies have different forms. We write both.
Schools & Educational
Schools, daycares, preschools, tutoring centers, and educational nonprofits need property, general liability, abuse and molestation coverage, educators' professional liability, directors & officers (D&O), and student-accident coverage. We write private schools, childcare, and education programs.
Technology & IT
Technology companies need technology E&O (which blends professional liability and cyber), general liability, and property for equipment. Software, IT services, SaaS, and hardware firms each carry different exposures. We write startups through established tech businesses.

Common questions
What insurance does my Michigan business need?
At minimum, most Michigan businesses need General Liability and Workers Compensation (required by Michigan law for most businesses with 1+ employees). Beyond that, you'll likely want Commercial Property if you own equipment or inventory, Commercial Auto if you have business vehicles, Professional Liability if you give professional advice, and an Umbrella policy for catastrophic claims. We help every business owner figure out the right stack.
Do I need workers compensation insurance in Michigan?
Yes — Michigan law requires workers compensation coverage for almost every employer. Specifically: any private employer with 1+ employees working 35+ hours per week for 13+ weeks per year, or 3+ employees at any one time. Sole proprietors, partners, and certain corporate officers can opt out, but coverage is required for any other employees.
How much does business insurance cost?
It depends entirely on your industry, revenue, payroll, claims history, and location. A typical small office-based business might pay $500-$1,500/year for general liability. A restaurant or contractor will pay more. Workers compensation is rated per $100 of payroll and varies by job classification. We give every business a detailed quote across multiple carriers.
What is a Business Owners Policy (BOP)?
A BOP bundles general liability, commercial property, and business interruption coverage into one policy at a lower price than buying each separately. Available to businesses that meet underwriting criteria (typically office-based, retail, light contracting, restaurants, and similar — high-risk industries usually need separate policies).
