What actually drives your life insurance rate

Two things do most of the work: your age and your health. Every year you wait costs money, and the increase is not linear — premiums climb faster in your fifties than in your thirties. After those two come tobacco use, the amount of coverage, the length of the term, family medical history, occupation, driving record, and a handful of hobbies carriers care about, such as private aviation and scuba diving.

Two things that don't change your rate as much as people expect: your credit score and your state. Michigan residents pay broadly what everyone else pays for life insurance — unlike auto insurance, where Michigan is genuinely its own animal.

What to have ready

  • Your date of birth and, roughly, your height and weight
  • Your mortgage balance and any other debt
  • What coverage you already have, including through work
  • A rough sense of your household income

You do not need medical records, and for many healthy applicants there is no paramedical exam at all — carriers increasingly use prescription and other database records instead. Whether you qualify for that depends on your age, the amount, and your history.

Term or permanent?

Term life is the workhorse: you pick a length — usually 10, 20, or 30 years — and a death benefit, and the premium is fixed for that period. It is far and away the most coverage per dollar, and for most families raising kids and carrying a mortgage it is the right answer. Whole and universal life cost considerably more for the same death benefit but last your whole life and build cash value, which earns them a place in estate planning and in providing for a dependent who will always need support.

Common questions

How much life insurance do I need?

A common starting point is enough to replace your income until your youngest is grown, pay off the mortgage and other debt, cover college, and handle final expenses — minus whatever coverage you already have. That is exactly what the calculator above works out. Treat it as a starting point for a conversation rather than a recommendation for your specific situation.

How fast can I actually get covered?

For straightforward term coverage you can see a real rate online in about two minutes and start an application the same day. Cases involving permanent coverage, business-owned policies, larger face amounts, or any health history go to a licensed agent here, normally within one business day.

Is the coverage through my job enough?

Usually not. Group coverage is commonly one to two times salary, which rarely covers a mortgage plus income replacement — and it almost never follows you when you change jobs. An individual policy is yours regardless of where you work.

Why use an independent agency instead of going straight to one carrier?

Carriers price the same person very differently, and the gap widens as soon as there is any health history. We hold appointments with more than ten personal lines carriers, so we compare offers instead of presenting one. For plain, healthy term the spread is often small — which is exactly why we also offer the instant-rate path above rather than pretending everyone needs a phone call.
