Your Michigan Insurance Renewal Went Up Again. What a Captive Agent Can't Do About It

Your Michigan Insurance Renewal Went Up Again. What a Captive Agent Can't Do About It

Why did your Michigan insurance renewal go up again? Each insurance company files its own rates, rating rules and discounts, and those change on different schedules and in different directions. If nothing changed in your household and your bill still went up, that's usually your company's rate or rating change. A captive agent, who represents one company, can review your coverage and discounts within that company, but generally can't show you how other companies would price the same household.

The short version: National auto insurance prices fell 5% over the past year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. If nothing changed in your household and your bill went up anyway, that's usually your company's rate change — and the most effective response is to see how several companies would price your home, auto and umbrella together.

What's actually changed in 2026

  • Auto prices eased nationally. The Consumer Price Index for motor vehicle insurance was down 5.0% from September 2025 to September 2026, though car repair costs were still up 5.8% over the year.
  • The Michigan catastrophic claims fee isn't the reason. The MCCA fee for policies from July 2026 to June 2027 is $84 per vehicle for unlimited PIP and $19 for other PIP choices, almost unchanged from the prior year, and it drops to $73 and $10 starting July 1, 2027.
  • Home rates are moderating. National effective approved homeowners rate changes averaged about 13.6% in 2024 and 6.3% in 2025, and about 1.8% through July 2026, according to S&P Global data reported by Insurance Journal.

Renewals also rise for household reasons: a new driver or vehicle, a ticket, a lost discount, or a higher coverage amount on the home. If none of those apply, look hard at how your company is pricing your profile. See why home insurance went up for the longer story.

It's not a "loyalty penalty" — Michigan bans that

You may have read that insurers raise rates on customers who won't shop. In Michigan that practice, called price optimization, is prohibited. The state's insurance regulator barred it in 2024, and a law signed in September 2026 makes price optimization, including pricing on how likely a customer is to shop, cancel or complain, an unfair or deceptive practice (Senate Bill 1013).

The real reason prices differ is simpler: each company has its own rates, tiers and discounts, and they change at different times. The same household can price very differently across companies, and the company that was best for you three years ago may not be today.

What a captive agent can and can't do

A captive agent sells insurance for one company; an independent agent can sell policies from many, as the National Association of Insurance Commissioners puts it. Independent agencies place about 62% of all U.S. property and casualty premium, but only about 40% of personal lines, so most personal-lines premium is written by companies that sell only their own policies.

A good captive agent can re-check your discounts, deductibles and coverages within their company. What they generally can't do is show you what another company would charge. That's the whole job of an independent agency. One more Michigan detail: if your company moves you into a higher-priced affiliate company without your request, Michigan treats that as a termination requiring 30 days' written notice with specific reasons (MCL 500.2104 and 500.2123).

Switching without a gap

  • Start the new policy the same day the old one ends. Driving without Michigan no-fault coverage is a misdemeanor, and an uninsured vehicle owner can lose PIP benefits entirely after an accident.
  • Switch at renewal when you can. Michigan requires a pro rata refund when you cancel an auto policy mid-term, and the minimum-retention charges some companies file don't apply to renewal policies or when you replace the policy with another company and show proof. Home policies vary, so switching on the renewal date avoids the question.
  • Re-sign your PIP choice. Your PIP selection doesn't transfer; the new company needs its own signed form. The opt-out, the $50,000 Medicaid option, or excluding a household member requires proof of other qualifying health coverage.
  • Move the package together. Home, auto and umbrella usually price best as a package, and your umbrella's underlying-limit requirements have to match. See how much bundling saves.

What to send us

Your current declarations pages for home, each auto policy, umbrella and any boat or RV; the renewal offer showing the increase; driver's license numbers for every licensed driver in the household; and your roof year and any home updates. With those, we can price the whole household with several companies at once. Our post on how to switch insurance agents in Michigan covers the mechanics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my car insurance go up in Michigan when I didn't have any claims?

Each company files its own rates and rating rules, and those change over time. Repair costs are still rising, and companies adjust rates and discounts differently. Michigan auto accident surcharges require an accident where you were more than 50% at fault, so a clean-record increase is usually a company rate or rating change, or a change in your insurance score at renewal. Comparing several companies is the most direct way to see whether you're priced fairly.

Do Michigan insurance companies charge loyal customers more?

Michigan bans price optimization: the regulator prohibited it in 2024, and a 2026 law makes it an unfair or deceptive practice to price a policy on how likely a customer is to shop, cancel or complain. That doesn't mean your current company's price is the best available, since each company files its own rates and discounts.

What is the difference between a captive and an independent insurance agent?

A captive agent sells insurance for one company. An independent agent can sell policies from many companies and compare them for you. Both can review your coverage, but an independent agent is generally the one who can show you how several companies would price the same household.

Will I get a refund if I switch insurance companies mid-term in Michigan?

For auto, Michigan requires a pro rata refund when you cancel, and filed minimum-retention charges don't apply to renewal policies or when you replace the policy with another company and show proof. Home policies vary, so switching on your renewal date is simplest.

What do I need to get an insurance quote?

Your current declarations pages, your renewal offer, driver's license numbers for every household driver, vehicle identification numbers, and details about your home such as roof year and updates. Declarations pages are the most important; they let an agent quote the same coverage you have now.
