Buying a New Car in Michigan? Get the Insurance Quote Before You Sign

Should you get an insurance quote before buying a new car in Michigan? Yes. Vehicles at the same sticker price can cost very different amounts to insure, and Michigan requires proof of no-fault insurance to register the car. Calling your agent with the VIN before you sign tells you the true monthly cost and gets coverage in place the day you take delivery.

The short version: Call before you sign, not after. Give us the vehicle details, how you're financing or leasing, and your trade-in. We'll quote it with several companies, confirm your coverage starts when you take the keys, and tell you whether you need GAP coverage.

Why the quote can change the deal

Insurance companies price each vehicle on its own claim history: how much it costs to repair, how often it's stolen, how well it protects people in a crash. Two SUVs at the same price can be far apart on premium. Repairs have also become more expensive as vehicles have added sensors, cameras and driver-assistance systems. The preliminary average cost of a repairable collision claim was about $4,818 in 2025, according to CCC Intelligent Solutions' Crash Course 2026 report, as reported by Repairer Driven News.

Finding out about a higher premium after you've signed means you're stuck with it. Knowing ahead of time lets you compare models or trims, or plan the payment correctly.

How long a new car is covered automatically

Most auto policies give a short window to add a newly acquired car, but it is short, and the details matter. Under ISO's 2018 personal auto policy (PP 00 01 09 18, which many carriers build from):

  • You have 14 days to ask your company to insure a newly acquired car. If you ask in time, it has the broadest coverage you carry on any car on your policy from the day you became the owner.
  • Collision and comprehensive have a catch. If no car on your policy has that coverage, the window is only four days, and a $500 deductible applies to a loss before you call.
  • Miss the window and coverage starts only on the day you ask.

Michigan carriers attach state-specific endorsements and many use their own forms, so your grace period may be different. Don't count on it. Call before you drive away.

Michigan registration and proof of insurance

  • Proof is required to register. Michigan's Secretary of State requires proof of a valid Michigan no-fault policy to register a vehicle. Most dealers handle the title and registration for you, so they'll ask for it.
  • Private sales. You can drive a car bought from a private seller without a plate for three days from the sale, directly to where you'll keep it, with the assigned title and proof of insurance with you.
  • Driving uninsured is a crime. In Michigan it's a misdemeanor, with a fine of $200 to $500, up to a year in jail, or both (MCL 500.3102).

GAP coverage and leases

A new car loses value quickly, and in the first years you can owe more on the loan than the car is worth. GAP coverage generally pays all or part of that difference if the car is totaled or stolen and not recovered. Dealers sell GAP waivers under Michigan's GAP waiver law, some auto insurers sell GAP coverage, and some leases include it. See GAP insurance in Michigan.

Set the coverage right from day one

  • Liability. We recommend limits above Michigan's 250/500 default, especially if you have assets to protect or an umbrella policy, which usually requires at least 250/500 underneath it.
  • Collision and comprehensive. A lender or leasing company will require both. Choose deductibles you could pay tomorrow. See comprehensive vs. collision in Michigan.
  • Electric vehicles. EVs and other advanced vehicles have their own repair and coverage questions. See what insurance a Tesla owner needs.

What to send us before you sign

The VIN or the exact year, make, model and trim; whether you're buying, financing or leasing and the lender's name; the car you're trading in or keeping; and who will drive it most. That's enough to quote it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I get car insurance before buying a car?

Yes. Get a quote before you sign so you know the real monthly cost, and have coverage in place before you drive the car. Michigan requires proof of no-fault insurance to register it, and lenders require collision and comprehensive.

How long do I have to add a new car to my insurance?

Under ISO's 2018 personal auto policy, 14 days. But if no car on your policy has collision or comprehensive, those coverages have only a four-day window, with a $500 deductible for losses before you call. Carriers' forms vary, so call before you drive away.

Can I drive a car home without insurance in Michigan?

No. Driving without Michigan no-fault coverage is a misdemeanor. For a private sale, you can drive without a plate for three days, but you must carry proof of insurance.

Do I need GAP insurance on a new car?

Often, if you're financing with a small down payment or a long loan, because you can owe more than the car is worth. Many leases include it. GAP is available from dealers as a waiver and from some auto insurers.

Why do two cars with the same price have different insurance rates?

Insurers price each vehicle on its repair costs, theft rates and injury claim history. Sensors, cameras and specialized parts can make one model much more expensive to repair than another.

The bottom line

The insurance is part of the price of the car. One call before you sign tells you what it really costs and makes sure you're covered the minute you take the keys.
